July 2016 Newletter

Dominic Richardson

We invite you to Dominic Richardson's first solo exhibition from 1st August to the 30th August. Join us on Sunday 31st July for the preview. Refreshments will be available and an opportunity to meet Dominic. 12-3pm

Dominic Richardson

This month, we are celebrating the hard work that Dominic Richardson has done towards a Silver Arts Award. Over the last 18 months, Dominic has completed a body of work including a 16ft painting, drawings, sketches and much more. He has learned to build a website and has published his Arts Award on that site -

Dominic's work is a great achievement made more special because Dominic has a brain injury acquired from a road traffic accident when he was two years old. The injury is mainly to the left side of his brain and has resulted in some sight issues (blindsight and tunnel vision), right sided hemiplegia (limited use of the right side of his body) and learning difficulties. However, because the left side of his brain (the side typically associated with creativity and emotion) was not damaged he has naturally developed an interest in music and art and an individual perspective on these interests.

Summer Arts Programme

Arts Award 2016

Last year's Arts Award programme was jammed packed with exciting projects including the Summer Art project - the Hobbit Hole.

This year will be just as exciting. We will be working closely with ages 7-25 to help them build up their Arts Award portfolios. Through printing, painting, sculpture, film making, animation and much more, our young people will have access to many skills learning sessions that they would not have at school. For instance, Ben has built his own website as part of his Bronze Arts Award and Josh and Lee are creating an art film for their Silver Arts Award, based around the Whistle Art Stop that they will be screening later on in the year. Dominic is preparing to hold an exhibition of his Silver Arts Award and Hannah is just finishing her Discover and is eagerly wanting to start her Explore. These are just a few names of a very long list!

You can book for any of the listed workshops here

Arts Award students receive 50% off the listed price, so please book and pay on the day. £2 per session or 10 sessions for £15

We would like to extend our thanks to Sherburn House Chariteable Trust and L'Anson Family Trust for supporting our Arts Award Scheme.

The Jungle Art Stop

In June, I made my second visit to the Jungle in Calais. I was shocked by the changes there. A devastating fire had broken out and 500 refugees were left without shelter or anywhere to sleep. As usual, the amazing work of all the volunteers across Europe, rallied together to rebuild their homes. Donations from Haltwhistle included a lorry full of building materials; fresh food; clothes and camping equipment. But everyday 30-40 people are arriving, mostly from Syria, after an 8 month trek. The camp is at bursting point.

I arrived at Care Calais workshop with my van load and then was soon put to work to help with an exhibition of UK primary school art work alongide Refugee's work. Then into the camp to work with the young people in Baloos, the youth centre. A few visits to the other schools to assess how to help on the next trip and delivering equipment already requested.

We need your help! Even a small donation of £5 will help to buy the materials and to part fund this trip. Only a couple of days to go.

Dig deep for a great cause.
